I just finished this audio book. It is hands down one of the best books I’ve read (or in this case, listened to) in years. As a southerner who is not proud of our civil rights heritage, this book makes you realize there were truly heroic people behind the scenes during the civil rights movement. Although this is a fictional book, the struggles were real – as were the hatred and racism. Unfortunately, I know people who are still like Hilly Holbrook (oh, how I wanted to punch her in the face), and fortunately, I know people who are like Abilene and Skeeter. It’s the spirit of the Abilene’s, Skeeter’s and Minny’s, that make me a proud southerner.

Trying to enjoy fast online-video via computer or HDTV? Painful, right? I bought a faster computer. I bought a faster wireless router. I did everything I could think of to avoid slow loading of YouTube and Hulu. Everything except run direct ethernet line (too far and blocked). I didn’t consider this powerline option until industry guru Jim Louderback suggested it, and I bought it immediately (literally from his laptop at a bar). VERY pleased maybe because I did not expect it to work very well if at all. I just couldn’t conceptually accept that an electric current could expedite an ethernet signal any better than a good wireless modem. But indeed my web-tv is streaming faster- no more cashing constantly or freezing. It kicked my 5 wireless routers in the ass. I may buy a few more of these puppies because it’s SOOO much easier than running direct ethernet. And I’ve finally come to realize that wireless is not the magic bullet I’d expect. I used to laugh at people that wired their house with ethernet, and they’ve got the last laugh. But these puppies are a big help for incredibly easy install and low cost (relative to time/effort of running a dang cable through walls and basement.

This is a great pedometer. In the first couple days, I tried to see how accurately it tracked my steps – I am completely pleased. I don’t believe that it really over or underestimates how many steps I take. I love that it can calibrate for me to include distance travelled and if I’ve had any moments of aerobic walking and how long those were. I really like the 7 day history as well so that I can go back and put in my steps for days that I forget to log. Excellent device! I really hope it holds up!

I loved to go to the book stores, leaving with hundreds of dollars of books and magazines. I still go and spend time looking at books and enjoying the experience, but now I just photograph titles the interest me with my cell phone and buy the books on my Kindle (for about a third of the price and sometimes even lower). I also use the Kindle, it is so easy to find the books I want and to see what others think about new authors and new books. The dictionary is also a kick, when reading I always had a dictionary near by to look up words that were unfamiliar, with the Kindle its built in, quick and easy. I can also highlight and store any words I like and want to start using or references I want to explore in “My Clippings”. The ability to adjust the text size is another wonderful feature. I do a lot of my reading at night and as I get tired, and my eyes start to fade i can increase the text size to make it easier to see what I am reading. The only draw back to the Kindle it the click sound it makes when you turn the page it can get annoying for my wife when she is trying to fall asleep. The Kindle is what the internet and the electronic age was made for, buy it!

I have a golden retriever whose hair seems to be everywhere in the house. I’ve tried all sorts of brushes and daily routines and still have hair everywhere. And then I finally decided to try the Furminator. I ordered it on Thursday night and was told I should expect it on Wednesday morning as it had to come all the way to India but it arrived on Monday itself. I tried it out. It is amazing! Gobs and gobs of hair came off. My dog actually enjoys the brushing, looks a lot sleeker (I hope he feels the heat less) and better groomed and the fur is a lot softer! I actually got compliments on his grooming when I took him to the vet yesterday. I only wish I had discovered it earlier.

I found this book in a dusty little corner of my local used bookstore (yes, they do still exist) and was intrigued by the title and premise. A few months later I have now read the entire trilogy and must say it really speaks directly to the soul, bypassing all the mental gatekeeping we humans come up with to deny ourselves direct contact with the source of our being. I’m not one of those folks who think that all religions are only in the business of building their own power by feeding gullible minds with fear and judgment — there are certainly very enlightened folks with open hearts and minds within organized religion. Yet, I’ve always been skeptical of the ones who try to tell you that their views are absolute and threaten you if you choose a different vehicle to find love and meaning in life. It’s just too obvious that anyone who tries to tell you that God is vengeful or would exclude some of us is just insecure in themselves. As Michael Franti says: “God is too big for just one nation, and God is too big for just one religion.” Yell Fire!

What tells me that Neale Donald Walsch has really tapped into the essence of God is that the books read as refreshingly and truthfully in 2009 as they must have when they first came out in the mid-90s. This phenomenon in itself is discussed in the book — the fact that God really is timeless and nameless. Too often we’re stuck in the dualistic mechanisms of our mind that tells us to divide everything — yesterday versus tomorrow, us versus them, believers vs non-believers. In that very same mindset we also like to look at “God” as a particular thing or person, something we can imagine or portray with our thoughts. And too often, religious texts create the same kind of hierarchy of spirit that we assign to our social structures on earth. For example, looking at God as “The Father” is a very common image conjured by a patriarchic mindset, as if there’s some sort of a guy sitting somewhere up there wagging his imaginary finger at
